Through award-winning productions and events, these champions embody the spirit of the arts, driving creativity, innovation, collaboration, and excellence. AfriArtsConnect proudly partners with them to create a sustainable ecosystem where performing artists are valued, celebrated, and supported.

Steven Stead

Co-founder of KickstArt Theatre, Steven is a celebrated director and producer with over three decades of experience in South Africa's performing arts. Known for his visionary work and dedication to nurturing talent, Steven has been instrumental in some of the country's most acclaimed productions. As a champion for AfriArtsConnect, Steven brings his passion and commitment to empowering the next generation of performers, making him a key advocate for this dynamic platform.

Lesego van Niekerk

Lesego has danced professionally since the age of 18 on local and international stages. Her innovation, development and leadership within the sector is amplified by her engagement as a founding member of SADA, board member of STAND (Sustaining Theatre and Dance Foundation) and Chairperson of TADA (Theatre and Dance Aliance).

Mthokozisi Zulu

Mthokozisi Zulu is a dynamic South African independent theatre practitioner, filmmaker, actor, director and playwright. He serves as Deputy Chairperson for TADA (Theatre and Dance Alliance) and is the Head of Drama at Go Durban Academy. A Broadway World Nominee for Performer of the Decade in 2020 and an Ovation Award recipient at the National Arts Festival in 2021, Mthokozisi is passionate about fostering local talent.

Greg King

Greg King is the artistic director of KickstArt Theatre Productions. His multifaceted career spans acting, puppeteering, directing, and design. Greg won the Durban Theatre Award for Set Design every year from 1999 to 2017. 2019 included a Naledi Award and a Fleur du Cap Award.  2023 Fleur du Cap for Best Set Design for  Fordsburg’s Finest. Greg believes in the cultivation of world class technical and design departments to ensure a sustainable future which AfriArtsConnect is building.

Trulife

Trulife is a non-profit organisation dedicated to educating, inspiring, and equipping the next generation to make courageous choices that lead to brighter futures. Using the performing arts as a powerful tool, Trulife delivers live school shows, online resources, and leadership summits to drive its mission. Partnering with AfriArtsConnect—a vibrant and innovative hub for creativity—will allow an extension of the reach and impact youth from all walks of life.

Mpilo Nzimande

Mpilo Nzimande is a dynamic performer, MC, and storyteller whose career reflects both range and depth. Trained at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, he has built a reputation over more than a decade as an actor with remarkable versatility, seamlessly shifting between comedy, drama, physical theatre, industrial theatre, and educational performance. Beyond the stage, Mpilo’s charismatic presence has made him a sought-after MC for high-profile events, while his rich and resonant voice has brought life to voiceovers, radio, and animation. His work extends into television, advertising, and edutainment, where he uses performance as a powerful tool to inspire, engage, and connect with audiences. Passionate about social impact, Mpilo believes in the transformative power of the arts to educate, uplift, and bring about change. With his wealth of experience, creative adaptability, and dedication to community, he embodies the spirit of AfriArtsConnect and stands as a true Afri-Champion.

Rajesh Gopie

Rajesh has made his mark on stages and screens across the world. He began his studies at the University of Natal, earning a degree in English, Drama, and History. Later, he trained in the UK and was awarded the prestigious Oppenheimer Scholarship. He completed his Master’s degree in Actor Training and Coaching at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Rajesh is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking solo play, Out of Bounds, which he wrote, directed, and performed. This powerful work toured internationally, playing in the UK, Europe, the United States, India, and of course, across South Africa. It earned him some of the highest accolades in theatre, including the FNB Vita Award, the Fleur du Cap Award, and the Edinburgh Fringe First Award. His other theatre works include The Coolie Odyssey and his directorial interpretation of Yerma, among many others. Rajesh has also performed at the request of none other than Nelson Mandela—a testament to the significance of his work. On screen, you may know him from Keeping Up with the Kandasamy’s, which became the highest-grossing South African film of its time. He also starred in Mayfair, a film that earned international attention, screening at the BFI London Film Festival and Africa in Motion. Beyond performance, Rajesh has made an enormous contribution to arts education. He was the Head of the Performance School at AFDA Durban and served as an Artist-Scholar in Residence at Wits University. He also founded ActorWize, a training initiative for aspiring actors. From local stages to global festivals, from teaching studios to the big screen—Rajesh Gopie continues to inspire, challenge, and elevate South African storytelling.
